India Silver Import Restrictions Trigger Shortages, Drive Local Premiums Higher
India's tightened silver import rules have nearly halted overseas purchases, creating domestic shortages that pushed local premiums above $6.50 per ounce despite decreasing demand in the world's largest silver market.
India's crackdown on silver importing rules has triggered supply gaps across the globe's biggest consumer of the white metal, driving local premiums higher, the worst in about half a year, even though demand remains lower compared to peak silver trading mania months ago.
With India sourcing majority of its silver requirements from abroad, reduced inbound shipments could apply downward pressure on worldwide prices while simultaneously narrowing the nation's trade imbalance and relieving strain on Indian fiat currency, the rupee.
Premiums over official domestic rates climbed to $6.50 per ounce recently, exceeding benchmark prices by over 10%, a sharp reversal from discounts of $5.50 per ounce recorded in May, according to dealers.
New Delhi imposed immediate restrictions on nearly all forms of silver imports in mid-May, then followed up in June by adding silver grain and powder to the controlled list, requiring advance authorization.
The impact has been swift: trade ministry figures show silver imports plunged to just 46.8 tons in May from 534.3 tons during the same month a year earlier. June volumes reportedly fell even further.
These measures form part of a broader government push to limit precious metals inflows, including hiking import duties on precious metals from 6% to 15%, aimed at protecting foreign currency reserves and supporting the rupee.
Following the duty increase, many investors locked in gains and pulled out of silver exchange-traded funds, a Mumbai-based bullion dealer at a private bank noted. The redemption of ETF holdings temporarily injected metal into the domestic market, masking the impact of tighter import rules.
At present, the Indian market leans heavily on output from Hindustan Zinc, the country's largest silver producer.
India's primary silver suppliers like the UK, China, and the UAE. Silver demand in the country involves not just people who're looking to invest in the metal, but also include jewellery and industrial uses like electronics and solar panels.
In the meantime, global silver spot price today is not doing that well, where it currently trades around $58 per ounce.
