Gold FAQ
What does "XAU" mean?
XAU is the price of one troy ounce of gold. "XAU" is the ISO code for gold, X marks a non-national commodity, and AU comes from the Latin aurum, paired against currency of your choice. For example, a quote of XAU/USD = 4,000 simply means one troy ounce of gold costs $4,000 in USD.
How is the gold spot price determined, and who sets it?
No single exchange sets the gold spot price. The price here emerges from continuous over-the-counter trading between banks, dealers, and institutions globally. The figure shown here reflects this global interbank spot market, aggregated in real time.
How often is the gold price on this page updated?
The gold price refreshes in real time during global trading hours as new market quotes arrive, pausing only for a short daily break and over the weekend when major markets close. This means the price you see closely tracks live market conditions. The frontend cache here may be delayed by up to ~1 minute though, which is subject to our policy changes in the future.
Why does the gold price fluctuate throughout the trading day?
Gold's price shifts constantly as supply and demand move across markets in different time zones. Key indicators include the strength of the U.S. dollar, different interest-rate expectations, inflation data, and geopolitical events, any of which can move the price within minutes. Because gold trades almost around the clock, it reacts continuously to news out of Asia, Europe, the Americas, and other regions.
What does "above-ground supply" of gold mean?
Above-ground supply is all the gold ever mined that still exists today, held as bars, coins, jewelry, and industrial or central-bank reserves. Unlike commodities that get consumed, most gold is never destroyed, so this stockpile only grows slowly through new mining each year. It's a key metric because gold's total market value rests on this entire existing supply, not just newly mined output. It's updated per year.
What is a troy ounce (ozt), and how does it differ from a standard ounce?
A troy ounce is the standard unit for weighing precious metals and equals about 31.1 grams. It's heavier than a standard (avoirdupois) ounce of about 28.35 grams, roughly a 10% difference. Standard gold prices are quoted per troy ounce.
What time ranges can I view on the gold price chart?
The chart lets you view gold across multiple time frames and changes across different time period. Right now we have hourly candle timeframe and daily candle timeframe, and we plan to add more in the future.
